Thursday 3rd March. Nelson to Queen Charlotte Drive.
We drove out of Nelson in the direction of Picton. Nigel was driving and I was going through the tourist brochures looking for somewhere to park up again. We stopped at Havelock and gave the camp site there a quick once over before deciding to carry on a bit further as it was still quite early in the day. We took the scenic route on Queen Charlotte drive and found a very nice department of conservation camp site, by the water. http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/conservation-campsites-by-region/marlborough/sounds-area/momorangi/
We had the option of parking up right on the beach or just across the road nearer to the facilities. We decided to park over the road as it was much quieter and there was lots of room. We opened up the van and I started to get lunch and it soon became obvious that there was a major problem. Wasps!! Whilst not being paranoid about these little devils I certainly didn't want the van full of them so despite the fact that the sun was shining we had to close up the van and eat inside. After lunch I decided to take my chair and book and go and sit on the beach for the afternoon. It then became apparent that the wasps were everywhere and flying at a low level all over the grass. Ah well, even in paradise there are problems! I found a relatively waspless area on the beach and settled down to read and view the scenery from time to time. Nigel came down for a while and we sat and watched the sea and had a walk along the beach.I went to the camp kitchen to cook supper and met a friendly English couple who were camper vanning as well. They were crossing over to North Island the next day. Next morning it was pretty wet so we decided to head off towards Picton and the east coast. It would have been nice to spend another day there had it not been for the wasps and the rain as it was a good site set in spectacular scenery.
